On 15 June 2007, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, 2 Beda College Seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Birmingham, Robert Devaney and John Peyton, were ordained to the diaconate along with 4 other candidates.
The ceremony took place in the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls in Rome, just across the road from the Beda.
The ordinations were carried out by Bishop David McGough, our Auxiliary Bishop here in the Birmingham Archdiocese, who preached a most inspiring homily.
He drew attention to the powerful image of the table- service at the table of the Lord being central to the ministry of the deacon. "In human life, it is often when gathered around a table that we are at our very best- at the table, we come out of our isolation."
"To serve at the Lord's table, to be ordained deacon, is to enable all that Christ came to serve."
As well as Fr. Eddie Clare, Vocations Director, 2 other priests from the Archdiocese were present- Fr. David Tams and Fr. Gerry McArdle, John Peyton's parish priest and spiritual director respectively
Afterwards, celebrations continued in the Beda College garden.
